In 2011 we will again use the best stretches* in the Arlberg, Lech Valley and Bregenz Forest. Right after the prologue on Thursday afternoon, the first kilometers wind their way along the “Lech Canyon” to Warth which will be closed to other traffic especially for us. This splendid stretch is usually not passable in winter due to the danger of avalanches.
On Friday we will go beyond Warth and continue to the Lech valley, the last whitewater river in this area of the Alps that has not been tamed by man. We then head away and climb up to Gramais, currently Austria’s smallest town with 65 inhabitants. Back in the Lech valley the next challenge awaits us in the roadbook: the climb to the top of the Hahntenjoch at 1,884 m.
We reach Nassereith on seldom travelled roads and continue by way of the Fern Pass to Lermoos. At lunchtime we will be spoiled by the MOHR life resort. The view from the terrace of this five-star hotel gives you an impressive view of the grand Zugspitze mountain.
The following trip through the curvy Berwanger Valley is a particular treat, whether in a car with 50 or 250 hp. We end up back in the Lech Valley and will see the romantically situated Hinterhornbach before returning to Lech. The evening is free to sample the fare of the Lech restaurants which cater to discriminating guests.
* subject to change if unforeseen circumstances arise
On the last day we will change the scenery and drive over the impressive Hochtannberg Pass into the splendid Bregenz Forest – a wonderful opportunity to enjoy nature and the route with its magnificent panorama views of Lake Constance and the Allgäu and Swiss mountains.
After the ascent to the Furkajoch at 1,760 m and the drive through the romantic Laternser Valley we will take our lunch break at the historical inn “Taube“ in Rankweil, which in 2005 received the “restaurant of the year in Vorarlberg“ award and is also famous for its classic strudel variations.
Fortified by this lunch we will drive around Bludenz on seven kilometers of the Rhine Valley Autobahn and are soon where classic car fans and their teams feel most at home: we will travel along the old Arlberg road by way of Klösterle and Stuben. Before we return to where it all began, we will pass an impressive example of Austrian road construction: the Flexengalerie which was hewn out of the stone in 1897.
That brings us back to Lech. And now you have the gala closing ceremony in the “Glass Tent” to look forward to, in the middle of the park belonging to the “Hotel Arlberg” and in the midst of the Lech mountains, where you can pick up your trophy and raise your glass to old and new friends in a toast to the eventful days of the Arlberg Classic Car Rally.
Cheers!
